The Life in Transition Survey
The Life in Transition Survey (LiTS), conducted jointly by EBRD and the World Bank in 2006, assesses
the impact of transition on people through their personal and professional experiences during the first 15
years of transition (Stata and CSV files). LiTS attempts to understand how these personal experiences of
transition relate to people’s attitudes toward market and political reforms, as well as their priorities for
the future. The data consist of 29,000 households, with 1,000 for each of the 29 countries surveyed; 16
countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and 11 in the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS), plus Turkey and Mongolia.
LiTS II (2010) surveyed about 39,000 households in 34 countries, which include France, Germany, Italy,
Sweden, and the UK as benchmark countries.
LiTS III (2016) polled 51,000 households in 34 countries, mainly “transition countries” in central and
eastern Europe as well as Turkey and also, for the sake of comparison with more prosperous western
neighbours, from Germany and Italy. For the first time, the survey also covered Cyprus and Greece.
